Food Banks Against Hunger (Os Bancos Alimentares Contra a Fome) have issued a plea asking everyone to contribute to their food collection campaign, which is being held from today until the 13th of December. Instead of their usual food collection points at participating supermarkets, they have asked if people would make donations either online at alimentestaideia.pt or by selecting vouchers which are available at supermarket checkouts. Each voucher has a specific bar code associated with the products which each person wants to donate to the Food Bank
In a statement the organisation commented “The social impact of the measures enacted to contain the spread of the pandemic are of an unbelievable dimension, putting many thousands of people in a situation of poverty that they could never imagine. Today, the food bank is supporting more than 60,000 people in addition to those who were already receiving support. The pandemic has caused an unprecedented economic crisis said Isabel Jonet, the President of the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks Against Hunger (Federação Portuguesa dos Bancos Alimentares Contra a Fome), who believes that if everyone, including the state, works together to alleviate hunger then civil unrest and despair can be avoided.
With the motto ‘At our table there is always room for one more’, the Food Bank’s campaign aims to encourage the population to share their food with the many families who are in crisis at this moment.
Finally, the food banks online donation portal can be accessed by anyone, anywhere in the world who would like to help provide food for people in need.
