The Socialist Party (PS) has submitted a draft resolution to the Madeiran plenary that ‘determines the criteria for the selection and acquisition of food and agri-food products, promoting sustainable consumption of certified local produce in public cafeterias throughout the Autonomous Region of Madeira’.
This is nothing new. The subject of supporting regional products has been unsuccessfully debated for years, but the competition authority claim that ‘using regional produce in schools and public cafeteria’s is not feasible under current legislative framework – it costs more!’
Arguing her case, PS party member, Sílvia Silva, demanded that regional produce can be purchased without contradicting current public procurement rules.
