Young Couple Seriously Injured in Accident

A young 20-year-old couple were involved in a serious road accident on Tuesday evening in Câmara de Lobos after the driver refused to stop when directed to by a Public Security Police (PSP) officer.

The incident occurred at about 9 pm at a time when the Volunteer Firefighters of Câmara de Lobos were cleaning up a road following an earlier accident.  Although there were no injuries in the  first accident, oil had spilled onto the road and had forced the closure of part of the carriageway while ‘sawdust’ was applied to the spill.  In addition, the Public Security Police were in attendance to control traffic as it bypassed the spillage via a detour using the opposite lane.

Unfortunately, the young male driver, who was not qualified and thinking it was a routine inspection, accelerated in order to avoid the officer and drove into an oncoming car. This full frontal collision resulted in serious injury to his passenger and who was incarcerated in the vehicle.  Once released from the wreckage she was admitted to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, where her condition was described as serious and she later underwent surgery. The young man, her boyfriend, also suffered serious injuries.

The wounded were assisted at the scene and transported to hospital by the Volunteer Firefighters of Câmara de Lobos.
