Return of Jet2 – A Happy Day for Madeira

‘It’s a happy day for Madeira’ quoted Eduardo Jesus, the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture as the first Jet2 flight from the UK landed since lockdown.  Remarking on this ‘historic’ occasion he said that “Jet2 is an extremely important airline for Madeira, it is the largest English tour operator that flies to the island and now that the doors have opened, we are expecting to receive a large number of visitors from the UK”

The regional secretary for Tourism and Culture notes that “despite the quarantine restrictions that the UK has, Jet2 has managed to motivate a wide range of tourists who, nevertheless, believe in the safety of the island and prefer to come here for their holidays even if they have to be quarantined on their return. This is a test of great confidence, both from the operator and from the English market, in relation to Madeira. Potential visitors are following, day after day, what happens here, the policy that has been followed by the Regional Government towards the creation of a safe destination, not because people say it is, but because we have implemented successful pandemic controls and holidaymakers recognise this.”

He concluded by saying that it is important to mention that the number of weekly flights will rise from 60 to 140 this August, a fact that leads Eduardo Jesus to believe that “the island’s recovery is happening” and that “it is necessary to believe and take advantage of this good news to boost the tourism sector.”
