Last Friday, the Vigilantes da Natureza (Nature Watchers team) located on the Desertas Islands Nature Reserve, found a Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta), trapped in a coil of cables at sea.
According to the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), the turtle was extremely lucky, as the team managed to remove the nets and cables wrapped around the poor creature and after confirming that the animal was uninjured they released it back into the sea off the east coast of Deserta Grande.
In a statement, the IFCN said that the animal swam off, and they just hoped that it would not become entangled in anything else left floating in the waters around the islands, a result of careless and inappropriate human behaviour.
