Madeira has recorded a new national historical maximum value of precipitation, during the passage of Storm Oscar through the region, announced the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA).

In addition to a orange/red coastal warning, waves are expected to reach anything between 5 and 13 metres on the north coast of Madeira and Porto Santo, the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea has also issued a yellow weather warning for the north coast and mountainous regions of the Madeiran archipelago.
This afternoon, the Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, Pedro Fino, travelled to Machico, in order to personally see the damage caused by the storm, most of which is in the Ribeira Grande area.
The Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) has confirmed that during a three hour period this morning (8.00 am to 11.00 am), 63.9 litres of water fell per square metre in Chão do Areerio. The heavy rains led to to the IPMA weather stations issuing 13 yellow alerts, 4 orange alerts and 1 red alert for rain.
