Madeira was under an orange warning today due to heavy rain until 3 p.m. Victor Prior, Director of the Funchal Meteorological Observatory of the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), told newspapers this morning that the situation "could de-escalate."
In view of the red alert issued by the IPMA, the Regional Secretary for the Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Susana Prada, warns that everyone should be careful when using any of the forest spaces to avoid endangering lives, wildlife, and heritage.
Madeira is currently under an orange alert for rain. The alert will remain in place until midnight tonight.
According to data published by the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) at 1 PM today, the highest temperatures recorded on the island were Santo da Serra with 31.4ºC, while Quinta Grande registered temperatures of 31.2ºC and Prazeres (Calheta) 31.1ºC.
The Regional Civil Protection Service announced this afternoon that the south coast of Madeira, the mountainous regions and Porto Santo will be placed under orange and yellow warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms between 00:00 and 15:00 on Sunday, due to the passage of a frontal depression, which is expected to hit the autonomous Region of Madeira early tomorrow morning.
In addition to a orange/red coastal warning, waves are expected to reach anything between 5 and 13 metres on the north coast of Madeira and Porto Santo, the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea has also issued a yellow weather warning for the north coast and mountainous regions of the Madeiran archipelago.
Depression Filomena is expected to affect the Madeiran archipelago from this afternoon until Friday.
The Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) has confirmed that during a three hour period this morning (8.00 am to 11.00 am), 63.9 litres of water fell per square metre in Chão do Areerio. The heavy rains led to to the IPMA weather stations issuing 13 yellow alerts, 4 orange alerts and 1 red alert for rain.
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has closed the leisure areas on the Areeiro / Eira do Serrado Forest Road, for safety reasons, due to the high temperatures forecast for Madeira for tomorrow (26th) and the day after (27th).
