A former Portuguese-Angolan footballer was convicted today in the court of Funchal (Building 2000), to 8 years in prison for introducing 14.26 kilos of heroin and 9 kilos of MDMA (ecstasy) to Madeira, inside a car transported by ship from Lisbon. The defendant, 29 years old and a resident of the Greater Lisbon area, was arrested by the Judiciary Police on the 22nd of October 2024, shortly after picking up the car at the port of Caniçal. He has been remanded in custody since then.
The ‘Anniversary’ operation resulted in the largest seizure of heroin ever made in Madeira. Today, during the reading of the judgment, Judge Carla Meneses said that almost all the facts contained in the indictment were proven by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, except those that referred to the former athlete already having another vehicle with drugs that was transported to Madeira. The judicial magistrate said that although the defendant was not the owner of the drug but a mere ‘courier,’ he was still part of a group that obtained money from drug trafficking.
