Yesterday, the Judiciary Police, through Madeira’s Criminal Investigation Department, arrested a couple accused of committing ten counts of qualified fraud and three counts of simple fraud, after carrying out arrest warrants issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Ponta do Sol.
The criminal scheme began in November 2024 and lasted until the date of the arrest, causing losses of over 170 thousand euros to about a dozen victims.
The man, 35 years old, and the woman, 26 years old, posed as importers of motor vehicles allegedly pawned in Germany, convincing the victims that they were able to legalise them and transport them to Madeira for later sale at very attractive prices, which never happened.
The couple made a living from this illicit activity and presented themselves to the victims with outward signs of wealth, driving high-powered vehicles and flashing large amounts of cash, as a way to give credibility to their criminal project.
The man, now in custody, has previously served time in prison for being convicted of similar crimes.
