AIMA Demand Surges

A news article printed in the ‘Portugal News’ indicates that there has been a higher-than-usual demand for AIMA services as many resident permits expired in June.

Resident Permits in Portugal were administratively extended due to the pandemic and a high number of immigrants seeking refuge in Portugal, eliminating the need for a new resident card. However, this changed yesterday with the expiration of Decree-Law-10-A/2010, which allowed expired documents to remain valid.

While talking to reporters, an AIMA spokesperson said that most people had scheduled an appointment, as now, all resident cards must be biometric, as dictated by the European Union.

Providing you have scheduled an appointment and paid for a card renewal, your permit is valid for a further 180 days.  For those who have yet to make an appointment, you have a couple of days’ grace, but as AIMA states, they had to create an end date for the automatic extension of resident permits.
