The Board of Directors of the Institute of Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts of Madeira (IVBAM), accompanied the official start of the 2025 harvest campaign. The visit, which included technicians from the Directorate of Viticulture, symbolises the institutional support for the sector and the valorisation of the work of the employees who control the entry of grapes into the facility.
The first evaluations, point to an excellent phytosanitary status of the grapes and a probable degree of slightly higher than expected alcohol.” As this is a first harvest, he continues, “it is expected that new sessions will still take place in the coming days, as some grape varieties need greater maturation to reach the ideal level required for the production of Madeira wines.
It also says that economic operators confirmed the expectation of a variation in the quantity compared to 2024, but stressed that the quality of the grapes harvested is higher than the previous year.” At the moment, technicians from the Directorate of Viticulture monitor the probable degree of each lot through analyses carried out at the grape reception point. This is done in the presence of winegrowers and transporters, ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the process of acquiring grapes by wine producers.
So far, 279 thousand kilos of grapes have been harvested, especially in the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos, SĂŁo Vicente, and Porto Santo.” Varieties harvested include Tinta Negra, Malvasia de SĂŁo Jorge, Terrantez, and Caracol at the moment.
