Wastewater Study

A Judicial Police (PJ) expert who was heard at the Permanent Civil Protection Commission today says the PJ is ready to proceed with a wastewater study.

Cláudia Perestrelo, from the PSD, was the first deputy to want clarification. Maria João Caldeira, in response to the recent amendment of the Drug Law, said that the PJ is a little lost in the matter, limiting itself to identifying only flagged drugs.

Marta Freitas, from the PS, asked how long it took to identify the drugs flagged in the Region and the timescale now.  Responding, the expert explained that in the past it had taken two years to identify new drugs, now it was a maximum of three months.

As drugs are metabolised in the body and excreted, wastewater testing can identify the drugs being used in a city or region.
