MagiCetus Exhibition at MadeiraShopping

From now until the 20th of October, MadeiraShopping will be hosting its “The sea, knowing to preserve!” MagiCetus exhibition. The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the importance of the balance of ecosystems and is part of the BaleiArte 2023/24 educational project, promoted by the Madeira Whale Museum. The exhibits were developed together with educational establishments and other social institutions, in a synergetic commitment to education and creativity.

The Madeira Whale Museum has been promoting the creative project BaleiArte, since 2012. MagiCetus, the name chosen for the 2023-2024 school year exhibition, symbolizes the combination of two worlds: the natural habitat of Cetus/cetaceans and the magical universe, to allude to plenitude, beauty, and balance.

This exhibition is open daily and is free of charge.

In partnership with educational establishments and local institutions, the artistic object created – MagiCetus – is a painted wooden cube, inspired by Rubik’s cubes. The object represents a species of cetacean, accompanied by information, present in the seas of the archipelago of Madeira. In addition, the object creatively alludes to environmental problems in the marine environment and to more or less “magical” solutions to combat them, alerting to the importance of the balance of ecosystems. The idea is to look with hope at environmental problems by rotating the cube, which represents Planet Earth, without it “breaking” into an irreversible imbalance.

About three hundred participants from the Dr. Maurílio da Sila Dantas Primary and Secondary School, of the Salesians of Funchal, and local institutions such as the Machico Inclusion Activity and Training Center, among others, were involved in this initiative.

Madeira Shopping, by hosting the Magicetus exhibition, reinforces its commitment to promoting differentiating experiences with the community, which unite ecological education and concern for life in the oceans through art.
