Positive Tourism and Travel Chaos

An interpreter-guide shared today, with JM, their outrage at the chaotic traffic in the Santo da Serra area, due to the large influx of visitors in private cars.

According to her, tourists in rent-a-car cars, and even Madeirans, protested due to the presence of the tourist bus in which she was performing her function.

“Any day we can’t ride the bus on this earth. Drivers have never had so much stress in their working lives. Forget the drivers. They only remember them in the event of an accident, but they avoid a lot of accidents every day,” she stressed.

About the situation experienced today, in Santo da Serra, she told reporters they could hardly get off the bus, let alone remain stationary.  It was impossible! “There is nothing but chaos and no police assistance,” adds the guide.

Mass tourism, which is reflected in the increase of cars on the road, has been changing, according to the same source, the routine of many of the scheduled excursions.

“We have to go early in the morning to Ponta de São Lourenço, early in the morning to Guindaste, early in the morning to the Santo market. And we are constantly changing our itineraries according to this mass tourism. I still remember when we could do everything.  Now every day is different.”

In defence of professionals, who, like her, face these daily difficulties, she recalls that it is not the guides who make the itineraries, but the agencies.

Other notices posted on social networks show many visitors are dissatisfied with the difficulty of reaching popular tourist attractions and that walking along some of the pedestrian routes is now a nightmare, not to be repeated.
