As part of the XXXIX programme of the Ponta do Pargo Pero Festival, a practical action on “Fruit Tree Planting Techniques” took place in the parish of Ponta do Pargo.
This action was promoted by technicians from the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development and was attended by 30 apple/pear producers from the parishes of Ponta do Pargo and Fajã da Ovelha.
The action was carried out on fire affected land and aims to provide local producers with the appropriate knowledge for the correct planting of trees, in this case, apple trees. The training is especially relevant to those renewing their fire affected plantations, and who are now contributing to the sustainability of the fruit growing sector and creation of new quality orchards.
During the training several topics relating to fruit trees, namely planting, fertilizers, how to prepare the plant by adjusting both the roots and the aerial part; how to place the plant so that it is not affected by flooding watering, and how to protect the plants from pests and diseases that can affect the crop at this early stage were addressed.
