9,000 Litres of Illegal Spirits Seized

on the 2nd of September, the Territorial Command of Madeira of the GNR, through the Information and Criminal Investigation Section and the Territorial Detachment of Funchal, seized more than 9,200 litres of illegally produced spirits in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos.

“In the course of an investigation into the illegal production and sale of alcoholic beverages, which constitutes a crime of fraudulent introduction for consumption and a crime against public health, the military of the Guard carried out two searches, one residence and one in a warehouse, which culminated in the seizure of the following material:

• 9 229 litres of spirits;
• 750 kilos of sugar;
• €2,800 in cash;
• Miscellaneous documentation related to the illicit activity;
• Various materials with an estimated value of around 30,000 euros.

In a press release, the GNR said it estimates that “the total value of the drinks and other goods seized is more than 245,000 euros, representing an estimated loss of around 76 600 euros, of missing tax.”

A 66-year-old man was identified and the case has been presented to the Judicial Court of Madeira.
