The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation of Madeira has partially re-opened some pedestrian routes in Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, which were closed due to the recent fires.
As of today, the Areeiro footpath, which connects to Pico Ruivo, on a seven-kilometer route, is passable from Pico do Areeiro to the Pedra Rija Viewpoint, over a length of 1.2 kilometers, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) said in a statement.
The Vereda da Ilha, in the municipality of Santana, was also partially reopened, between the Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo and the Island.
The IFCN also mentions that, on the Pico Ruivo footpath, the route is now passable from Achada do Teixeira to the Pico Ruivo Shelter House, in an extension of 2.4 kilometers.
Access to the summit of Pico Ruivo remains closed, and it is possible to circulate only to the Casa de Abrigo.
The IFCN warns of the importance of respecting the barriers and signs installed on these routes, due to the instability of the currently closed footpaths. They remind everyone that ignoring safety notices not only puts your life at risk but also the lives of the emergency teams who have to rescue you.
