Darren Kay – Parents Seek Answers

The parents of Darren Kay, the international fell runner who went missing in December 2022 in the area of Fajã area of Calheta while holidaying with his partner, are on the island trying to find answers as to what happened to their son.

Darren and his partner had just finished a two-hour Madeira familiarisation run when Darren said that he would run for a further twenty minutes. When he didn’t return, his partner, anxious for his safety checked the immediate vicinity, his proposed route, phoned the police and his parents.

The weather had been bad, and the waves in the area were reaching heights of 3 metres which hampered the search and rescue mission for 24 hours. Despite their best efforts, the search and rescue teams were unable to trace Darren on land or at sea.

“Above anything else, we just want to know what happened to our son, to find some trace of where he was and piece together what might have happened to him in those twenty minutes. We were told that he probably had been swept away by a wave, but we want to make sure, as he simply vanished and surely, something of his would have been swept up in the surrounding area if this had been the case.”

As such, Darren’s parents have asked that if anyone saw him during those last twenty minutes to contact them and help them piece together what happened.

The email to contact is kaylynne@hotmail.co.uk.

Our thoughts are with you.
