The Fundação S. João de Deus ‘Here I Go’ initiative aims to help those who are cared for by the Brothers of St. John (Irmãos de S. João de Deus no Funchal), to regain contact with their families, as many are prevented from doing so through sickness and poverty.
In a press statement, a spokesperson for the initiative said:
“Our patients decided to give us a challenge, the challenge being to allow them to visit their homes. Homes some of them have not seen for decades due to their illness. So, rising to the challenge the brothers have agreed to accompany each individual when they are ready to say “Here I Go!” But we need help, and like a piece in a puzzle, each friend of the Fundação S. João de Deus can be part of a whole: to acquire a transport vehicle adapted to people with reduced mobility.”
“To ensure that as many people as possible can help we have divided the car into 250 pieces (puzzle pieces), each with a value of 200 euros. Through this, we intend to raise the 50,000 euros that we need.”
