The Director General of Reinsertion and Prison Services (DRSP), Rómulo Mateus, confirmed today that the Funchal Prison Facility (EPF), has a few problems, as do most prisons in Portugal, and although it is almost at full capacity there are no overcrowding issues of the physical infrastructure to report.
The official (DGRSP) added that Portugal “has managed prison spaces, and that investments in electronic surveillance equipment has allowed for the safe removal of about two thousand offenders from prison facilities.”
He added that the DGRSP that although the Madeiran facility is close to 100%, the prison is being managed carefully.
