Road Restrictions Due to Funchal Marathon

On Sunday morning, the 23rd of January, the following road restrictions will apply due to the Funchal Marathon.  Road diversions and restrictions will apply from 08:00 to 15:00 and will mainly affect the following areas –  the axis between the Old Town and the Assicom Roundabout. 

During the marathon light passenger vehicles may be able to leave the affected residential buildings and hotel units, provided that the appropriate road safety conditions and of the participants of the event are observed, and coordinated by the Public Security Police.

The Funchal City Council asks drivers to comply with the temporary signage, and obey all instructions issued by the Public Security Police. 

Interruptions and traffic restrictions

From 08:00 and expected to open between 12:00 and 13:00, traffic will be interrupted on Estrada Monumental, Caminho do Amparo south of Rua do Vale da Ajuda, Rua José António de Freitas Gonçalves, Rua Nova do Vale da Ajuda a south of Rua do Vale da Ajuda, Rua da Casa Branca to the south of Rua Velha da Ajuda (where access to the hotel and car park of existing buildings will only be allowed), Rua Dr. Pita to the south of Rotunda Paulo Martins ( descending), Ponte do Ribeiro Seco and Avenida do Infante. 

Road traffic on the connecting streets, namely Rua do Cabrestante, Rua da Ponta da Cruz, Rua da Quinta Calaça, Travessa da Ajuda, Rua Saint Helier, Rua Prof. Dr. Gunther E. Maul, Rua Francisco de Sousa, Rua de Leichlingen, Rua Simplício dos Passos de Gouveia, Rua do Gorgulho,

During the interruption, drivers traveling downwards on Avenida Luís de Camões will be directed to Rua Tenente Coronel Sarmento.

Between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, traffic is interrupted on the following streets: Avenida Sá Carneiro, access tunnel to Rotunda Sá Carneiro (south of the roundabout next to La Vie Shopping Centre), Rua Dr. Brito Câmara, south of Rotunda do La Vie, Rua Cónego Jerónimo Dias Leite, Rotunda do Infante, Rua do Conselheiro José Silvestre Ribeiro, Avenida Arriaga, Rua do Aljube, Ponte do Bettencourt, Rua 5 de Outubro south of Ponte Nau Sem Rumo, Rua 31 de Janeiro south of the Bridge do Bettencourt, Rua Dr.º Fernão de Ornelas, Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo south of Rua do Seminary, Rua Visconde do Anadia, south of Ponte do Carmo (except access to the private car park of the Anadia building and public transport), Rua do Brigadeiro Oudinot south of Ponte do Mercado, Largo dos Varadouros, Rua dos Prophets, Praça da Autonomia, Rua da Casa da Luz and Rua D.Carlos I.

Parking ban

Between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm, parking is prohibited in the tolled areas of Estrada Monumental and Largo da Paz, and only light tourist transport vehicles are allowed to stop for passenger pick-up and drop-off operations.

Between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, parking is prohibited on the docks and in the parking spaces located at Avenida Sá Carneiro, Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses, Rua do Aljube and Avenida Arriaga.

Access to the car park located at Praça CR7 will be closed from 8:30 am and departures from 9:30 am.

Access and exit from the parking lots at Fórum Madeira, Marina Shopping, Galerias de São Lourenço, CC Anadia, CC Oudinot and other parking lots located in the area where the event will take place will be conditioned.

Public transport

During the period of interruption to traffic, public transport must use the following alternatives:

West zone – Rua João Paulo II, Estrada Eng.º Jaime Ornelas Camacho, Av. Calouste Gulbenkian and Rua Dr. Brito Câmara, terminating at 2000 or stopping at La Vie and resuming from there the return trips towards Rua Dr. Brito Camara.

Central area – Via 25 de Abril, Largo Severiano Ferraz, Rua 5 de Outubro, making a U-turn at Ponte Nau Sem Rumo, resuming from Rua 31 de Janeiro the return trips (terminus).

East zone – Via 25 de Abril, Rua do Visconde de Anadia, reversing the course at Ponte do Mercado towards Rua Brigadeiro Oudinot, terminating at Rua do Visconde de Anadia, Rua Brigadeiro Oudinot, Rua da Infância, Campo da Barca, Rua do Matadouro, next to the SREI Building and at the roundabout on Avenida Santiago Menor.

Taxi rank

The existing taxi ranks along Estrada Monumental, between Rotunda da Assicom and Ponte do Ribeiro Seco, will be deactivated between 08:00 and 13:00. The taxi ranks located at Largo António Nobre, Avenida Arriaga, Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses, Largo dos Varadouros and Avenida Sá Carneiro will be deactivated between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Alternatively, you can use the bus dock at Rua Conselheiro José Silvestre Ribeiro, the square located south of Marina Shopping (maximum 4 taxis) and the square at Rua Cónego Jerónimo Dias Leite (maximum 7 taxis), not exceeding the maximum number of taxis in each, ensuring that the traffic lane is not interrupted in case of an emergency.

Other information

Traffic on Rua Ponta da Cruz, Forum Madeira car park and Rua da Quinta Calaça will be directed towards Rua Simplício Passos Gouveia towards Rua da Casa Branca.

Traffic on Rua da Casa Branca, the section between Rua Velha da Ajuda and Estrada Monumental, will be carried out in an upward direction.

Traffic on Rua do Jasmineiro, the section between Avenida do Infante and number 10 of the police, will be carried out in both directions.

Traffic on Rua Imperatriz D. Amélia will be carried out in the opposite direction, exiting at Rua Carvalho Araújo.

Traffic on Rua dos Tanoeiros and Rua 5 de Outubro, the section south of Ponte do Bettencourt, will be carried out in the opposite direction with an exit to Ponte do Bettencourt.

Traffic on Rua Ivens will be carried out in the opposite direction, exiting at Rua dos Aranhas.

Access and departure from the Port of Funchal will be carried out exclusively through the Pontinha tunnel.

All traffic interruptions and restrictions will be coordinated by the Public Security Police who will also ensure the safety of the event. If the events end before the scheduled time, the restoration of normal road traffic conditions will come into effect.
