The Municipality of Funchal (CMF) has explained that the orange water seen flowing through Ribeira de João Gomes, Funchal, was due to routine maintenance work by Águas do Funchal. According to the CMF, the dye was used on the sewage network, where an obstruction caused the coloured water to leak into the natural watercourse.
The obstruction in the sewage pipe was located in Rua das Hortas, and has subsequently been repaired. The CMF stresses that the product used “is environmentally innocuous,” despite its colour.
