Siga Ticketing Problems

Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) has raised concerns about faults in the SIGA public transport ticketing system in Madeira and Porto Santo, saying they are disrupting passenger journeys, creating difficulties for drivers and preventing operators from collecting fares.

In a statement issued today, JPP deputy Paulo Alves said the party had received complaints from passengers about faulty equipment on buses. He stressed the need for proper equipment maintenance, reliable digital systems and effective integration.

The party also called on the Regional Government to settle outstanding compensation payments to transport operators for services provided, including additional services requested by the government.

“Although public transport is operated by private companies, the Government must honour its commitments under the concession contracts and ensure that compensation is paid on time,” Alves said.

In a statement, the JPP warned that payment delays could undermine operators’ financial stability and service quality. Alves pointed to workers at one operator being placed on a temporary lay-off scheme, describing this as a sign of financial difficulties.

“It is not enough to announce investment and modernisation. The Government must fulfil its obligations,” he said, adding that improvements to ticketing should deliver practical benefits for passengers, drivers and other transport staff.
