Dozens of health professionals attended a training session at Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal to explore how closer collaboration between cardiology and oncology can improve care for people with cancer.
Titled “Cardio-Oncology 2026: From Guidelines to the New Frontiers of Clinical Practice,” the SESARAM Training Centre organised the event. It focused on strengthening cooperation between the specialties throughout a patient’s journey, from diagnosis and treatment to long-term monitoring.
Opening the session, Ana Paula Vieira, director of SESARAM’s Medical Oncology Service, highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary working in identifying patients’ needs and improving care, particularly their safety.
“This is the purpose that brings us together: to offer care that is increasingly safer, integrated and attentive to the needs of each person,” she said.
Doctors Débora Sá, Ingrid Mora and Manuela Fiuza also contributed to the training, sharing their knowledge and clinical experience. Fiuza coordinates the Cardio-Oncology Unit at Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.
The initiative placed the individual patient at the centre of discussions, emphasising the importance of coordinated care during cancer treatment and in the years that follow.
