An Italian tourist was rescued this afternoon after falling approximately ten metres while walking along the Ponta de São Lourenço trail in Machico.
According to JM, the Machico Municipal Firefighters were travelling to the scene when they were informed that the rescue would be carried out by the Regional Civil Protection helicopter and its Search and Rescue (SAR) team.
The accident occurred just a few metres from the end of the trail. The woman, who had suffered head injuries, was located and stabilised before being winched to safety by the helicopter team.
She was then flown to the Cancela heliport, where an EMIR medical team and an ambulance were waiting. After receiving medical assistance, she was transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital and admitted to the Emergency Department.
