Two low-magnitude earthquakes were recorded off the coast of Porto Santo during the early hours of Monday, August the 3rd, according to the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA).
The first tremor occurred at 01.46 and measured 0.8 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located northwest of Porto Santo at a depth of 9 kilometres.
The second earthquake was recorded at 04.27, measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was northeast of Porto Santo at a depth of around 10 kilometres.
There have been no reports of either earthquake being felt by residents, and no damage has been reported.
Earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (below 2.0), very small (2.0 to 2.9), small (3.0 to 3.9), light (4.0 to 4.9), moderate (5.0 to 5.9), strong (6.0 to 6.9), major (7.0 to 7.9), great (8.0 to 8.9), exceptional (9.0 to 9.9) and extreme (10.0 or above).
