CTT – Correios de Portugal is reinforcing postal deliveries across the Autonomous Region of Madeira in a bid to restore normal service following weeks of disruption.
In a written response to DIÁRIO, the company said it is implementing a recovery plan that will increase distribution capacity by 25% through additional staff, a larger vehicle fleet and more delivery routes. The measures also include a reorganisation of internal operations and the expansion of alternative parcel collection services, including the Locky automated locker network and partner collection points.
CTT expects to expand its Locky network to 50 lockers by installing 30 new units across the Region, increasing its capacity to handle parcel deliveries. The company also said priority has been given to delivering critical correspondence, including pension vouchers, adding that the measures already introduced are beginning to produce positive results, with a gradual improvement in service.
Recruitment of additional staff is also continuing, with CTT describing the reinforcement of its workforce as essential to restoring normal operations.
The announcement comes after DIÁRIO received numerous complaints from residents across several Madeiran municipalities reporting significant delays in the delivery of letters and parcels.
According to readers, some items of correspondence dated May and June have only recently begun arriving. Others say mail has remained undelivered for several days before eventually reaching recipients, with similar problems reported in different parts of the island.
In its response, CTT said the delays stem from a combination of factors, including limitations on transporting mail between mainland Portugal and Madeira by both air and sea due to cargo capacity constraints. The company also acknowledged that a shortage of available workers has hampered efforts to fully restore operations, making it more difficult to clear the backlog created by irregular transport flows.
The postal operator says the latest measures are designed to improve delivery times and bring services back to normal as quickly as possible.
