The deputy of Chega (CH) elected by Madeira to the Assembly of the Republic, Francisco Gomes, accused the Regional Government of Madeira of promoting an uncontrolled immigration policy, claiming that the RG would rather respond to the interests of hotel groups and the construction sector than support its citizens. The parliamentarian also demanded that the Government of the Republic adopt urgent measures to stop the entry of immigrants into the Region.
The statements were made during a hearing with the Minister of the Presidency, LeitĂŁo Amaro, at the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees of the Assembly of the Republic.
According to the deputy, in the last four years, Madeira has more than doubled the number of resident immigrants, with an increase of around 160%. Francisco Gomes associated this evolution with a worsening of insecurity, crime, pressure on housing, and job insecurity in the Region.
“The Regional Government opened the doors of Madeira because it prefers to serve the interests of large hotel groups and construction companies friendly to the regime rather than to defend the safety, identity, and quality of life of Madeirans,” hotly contested the parliamentarian.
The CH deputy also accused the Government of the Republic of passively watching the migratory phenomenon in the Region, demanding a change of course in national immigration policies.
“The State cannot continue to pretend that nothing is happening. Madeira cannot stand any more uncontrolled immigration, and the government has an obligation to stop this process before the problems get even worse,” he said.
