Portuguese descendants who do not have a valid residence permit may be subject to expulsion proceedings, even when they have applications for Portuguese nationality in progress. The clarification was given today by Ana Cristina Monteiro, President of the Venecom Association, yesterday, after an audience of the new governing bodies of the association with the president of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira.
The leader of the Association sought to clarify doubts that have arisen among the Venezuelan community residing in the Region, especially following notifications issued by the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA).
According to Ana Cristina Monteiro, there is no expulsion order directed at the Venezuelan community. The procedures currently underway apply to all foreigners who are in an irregular documentary situation.
“There is no expulsion of the Venezuelan community. These are normal procedures that apply to all foreigners,” he said.
The leader explained that many of the doubts involve Portuguese descendants who are waiting for the conclusion of their Portuguese nationality processes. However, she warned that the existence of this request does not mean, by itself, that the person is in good standing.
“Nationality is a process that takes place in the institutes of registries and notary, but, while this process is taking place, the person has to regularise their situation through the residence permit,” he stressed.
