National Garden Day

The Funchal City Council marks National Garden Day on the 25th of May, with a programme of activities dedicated to the city’s green heritage.

The date honours landscape architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles (1922-2020), a reference figure in landscape architecture and environmental protection in Portugal.

The celebrations start in the morning with a lecture by arboriculturist Pedro Ginja, in the municipal assembly room, under the theme ‘Historic Gardens and Landscape Art in the Historic Centre of Funchal: considerations on the tree heritage and other stories’.

Three guided tours are planned throughout the day.  The first, at 11:00 am, runs through the gardens of the historic centre following the lecture; The second, at 2:15 pm, focuses on the Municipal Garden and its historical and natural contextualisation; and finally, the third, at 3:30 pm, will repeat the same route, but the talk will be in English.

Registration is open until the 22nd of May, and is limited to 15 participants per visit. To register your interest, please email: djevu@funchal.pt, indicating the number of participants in your group.
