A dog that was allegedly in the hands of a drug addict was rescued from the hands of its ‘alleged’ owner, for the amount of 40 euros, denounced today the Association Ajuda A Alimentar Cães on their social networks.
“To be able to save her, there were those who had to pay 40 euros. Forty euros for a life. Forty euros to take an animal out of the hands of those who never wanted to know about it,” reads their post on Instagram.
The association says this is the cruel reality of drug addicts who use animals, especially babies, as a way to get money to support addictions.”
“This happens on the streets of Funchal, in plain sight, and it is deeply difficult for us to realise that so many entities are aware and, even so, there is no inspection, no action, no protection for these animals. Where are the entities that should put an end to this? Where is the inspection on the ground, the patrols that should identify these situations, and act? Where are the checks on animals that are skin and bones, without microchips, without vaccines, exposed to the sun, cold, hunger, completely apathetic, used only as a tool to generate pity and money? This is not invisible. This happens every day,” underlines the Association Ajuda a Alimentar Cães (Help to Feed Dogs).
The dog named Strawberry Shortcake (Moranguinho) is now in the care of the aforementioned animal protection entity. According to the description, she is “extremely thin, hairless, scared, and lives on constant alert. Any noise, any movement, makes her tremble with fear, and she is only about six months old.”
“It makes no sense to continue to watch this without consequences. It makes no sense for Associations and citizens to carry this burden alone, while those who have the duty to intervene remain absent. Moranguinho has started her recovery, and with time, we hope that she finds her forever loving home.”
