Port of Funchal – Hero to Zero

Sílvia Silva of the PS has called out the Port of Funchal for its ineffective decarbonization policies.

“Seen from the outside, it will certainly seem ridiculous, as the PSD claimed, to be proposing decarbonisation measures for the Port of Funchal, when this is already, allegedly, the most sustainable cruise terminal in the world,” said the parliamentarian, referring to the title won “even before the Regional Government of Madeira has invested 700 thousand euros in a Greenports Madeira study,” co-financed by the European Union, which aimed to confirm the region’s commitment to decarbonisation.

The socialist cautioned that, despite the funds available for initiatives like decarbonising the Regional Public Administration or the Regional Economy, efforts to decarbonise Madeira’s ports remain stuck in propaganda. It’s like selling snake oil, failing to stop Madeira from simultaneously having the world’s most sustainable port and one of Europe’s 10 most polluted, according to the European Federation of Transport and Environment. A miracle, to hold both titles at once.

The deputy felt that the PS proposal would at least ensure the coherence of the titles and help achieve the European Union’s goals, even though, for the Government of Madeira, these goals aren’t as significant as the so-called sustainability titles.
