Golf v New Hospital

The Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) today criticised the disparity in expropriation values for the Faial golf course project, calling it “incomprehensible and unacceptable.”

According to a press release from the Regional Government, the Regional Government paid about 26 million euros in expropriation payments for about 17.2 hectares in one of the most prestigious areas of Funchal, intended for the construction of the new Central Hospital of Madeira, “an essential infrastructure for public health.”

While in Faial, a rural area of lower real estate value and located in the middle of the river, an investment of 36 million euros is planned for an oversized golf course, of about 70 hectares, point out the PTP.

“It is a scandal that the expropriation of the Faial Golf exceeds the cost of the Central Hospital of Madeira,” said Raquel Coelho, quoted in the same note, demanding explanations from the Regional Government.

The PTP adds that these figures reveal “a serious inconsistency in the management of public money” and raise suspicions about the criteria used and the interests that may be behind the golf project.
