Healthy Food in Vending Machines

Joana Silva presented a draft legislative decree that, as she stressed, “goes beyond the ordinance already in force” and defines standards for the placement of healthy products in vending machines. A diploma that, in addition to public services where legislation already exists, includes the entire private sector.

The PSD proposal establishes a list of healthy products, requires that a minimum percentage (50%) be in a prominent position, a monitoring committee, and mechanisms for inspection and administrative offences.

Joana Silva emphasizes that the measure applies to both the public and private sectors, highlighting the health risks associated with obesity. She notes that Portugal faces high obesity rates, with Madeira’s figures being the worst in Portugal.

Excess weight, says the deputy, who is a nutritionist by profession, is “the third highest death factor in Portugal and foreshortens life.”

JPP candidate PatrĂcia SpĂnola supported the proposal but defended the preference for regional products.

Other politicians aired their views, with one saying, ‘have your 50% but leave the chocolate!’
