The President of PS-Madeira today demanded public clarification from the Regional Government regarding the case of alleged fraud with European funds under PRODERAM, currently under judicial investigation.
On the sidelines of a visit to the Anona Regional Exhibition, in Faial, the socialist leader considered that the Regional Executive, as the entity responsible for the supervision of community funds, has the obligation to provide explanations about a process that has already led to three civil servants being questioned. Célia Pessegueiro warned that more than three million euros of public money has been defrauded, money that has to be accounted for.
The President of the PS-M pointed out that situations of this nature end up casting doubt on the work of many who perform functions rigorously, arguing that it is important to separate individual responsibilities to prevent the entire structure from being undermined due to suspicion.
The socialist leader also pointed out the fact that, in parallel with the reduction in support for farmers through the so-called partial support, funds from the same community programme have been transferred to reforestation projects, precisely one of the areas now being investigated.
“Farmers do not understand that while they receive derisory amounts of aid, suspicions arise about the use of millions of euros,” he said, arguing that the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and the President of the Regional Government should provide urgent public clarifications.
During her presence at the Cherimoya Festival, Célia Pessegueiro also took the opportunity to reinforce a proposal presented by the PS in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, aimed at guaranteeing the IRS exemption and the anticipation of the retirement age to 60 years for farmers covered by the Family Farming Statute.

The official recalled that about 98 percent of the farms in the Region are managed by individual farmers, considering that these measures could strengthen the income of agricultural families and encourage the continuity of activity in the sector.
