IPMA Issue Orange Weather Alert

The Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) has placed the Autonomous Region of Madeira under an orange weather warning due to worsening weather conditions in the coming days, with emphasis on strong winds, significant sea agitation, and predicted snowfall in mountainous areas.

For the north coast of Madeira and Porto Santo, an orange warning is forecast for sea agitation between 03:00 on Tuesday, the 3rd of March, until 06:00 on Wednesday, the 4th. Waves on the northwest coast are expected to reach between 5 and 11 metres in height. Wind gusts are expected to reach 95km/h accompanied by heavy rain at times.

On the south coast, the orange warning also applies to strong north/northwest winds at the eastern and western ends of the island for the same periods. Wind gusts may also reach 95km/h.

For the mountainous regions, the IPMA has issued an orange warning between 09:00 and 21:00 on Tuesday, the 3rd, as wind gusts can reach up to 120km/h.  A yellow warning for snowfall has been issued for altitudes above 1,500 metres from 06:00 to 18:00.  Forecasters predict that as much as 10cm of snow may fall.

In their statement, the IPMA predicts that the worsening weather will be felt from tomorrow and intensify on Tuesday, and citizens should be aware that roads may be affected or closed, that ice may form on roads above 1,500 m, and that adverse weather can damage structures and trees.
