The Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM), has confirmed that cancer continues to be the main cause of death for Madeirans. In 2024, 677 of the 2,574 residents who died in Madeira and Porto Santo died from cancer.
While a majority of people died from colon, rectal, and anal cancer (92 deaths), this was closely followed by tracheal, bronchi, and lung cancer, with 86 deaths recorded.
As the second cause of death in Madeira in 2024, diseases of the circulatory system caused the deaths of 642 people.
The deadliest triad is completed with diseases of the respiratory system, touching 386 deaths, which still translates into a reduction of 8.5% compared to 2023.
In the accounts released by DREM, Covid-19 is still present and killed 21 people. This was significantly lower than the 41 deaths in 2023.
