Madeiran Terrorist

A Madeiran man who served time in a UK prison between 2014 and 2016 and was later deported for Islamic extremism is being charged in Portugal on four accounts of terrorism, including incitement and glorification of violent acts.

According to Jornal de Notícias, the individual, who converted to Islam while serving a prison sentence, is using digital platforms to incite violent acts against so-called “infidels.”

The man returned to Madeira in 2016 and “continued to defend his radical ideology and maintain ‘online’ contacts with radical Islamic preachers,” according to the indictment.

Using social networks, the Public Prosecutors’ Office (MP) adds, he made publications disseminating “his ideology, glorifying radical preachers and motivating others to practice violent actions in obedience to the radical ideology he professes.”

The defendant was subject to the coercive measure of weekly presentation to the criminal police body in the area of residence, as well as to the prohibition on leaving the Autonomous Region of Madeira, on Wednesday.

He is also prohibited from posting online, on any platform, or consuming Salafi-jihadist content using digital platforms or media. He may not contact, by any means, even through an intermediary, radical preachers or other radicalised individuals.

The investigation of this case was in collaboration with the National Counterterrorism Unit.
