The Public Security Police (PSP) warns of the so-called ‘fake employee scam,’ a scheme in which the perpetrators pose as workers of essential services or public entities to deceive victims.
According to the authority, in this type of scam, the suspects present themselves as employees of water, electricity, banking institutions, Social Security or other official bodies, using a careful appearance, technical language and, in some cases, false documents, with the “aim of creating a sense of trust and legitimacy.”
The PSP clarifies that there are no official initiatives involving home visits to verify identification documents, collect personal data or obtain information for censuses, “so any approach with this pretext should be viewed with suspicion.”
In view of these situations, the police recommend that strangers are never allowed to enter the house, that identification is always requested and that, in case of doubt, contact the PSP immediately.
