From Tuesday the 27th, Madeira will be affected by periods of rain, strong winds, and significant sea agitation, confrmed the the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea.
In a press release, the National Weather Service highlighted the ongoing impact of Depression Joseph, currently in the North Atlantic and part of a large low-pressure system where several new centres are expected to develop in the coming days. By 03:00 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) tomorrow, the storm’s centre is forecast to be in the North Atlantic near 53°N and 40°W, with an atmospheric pressure of about 945 hectoPascals (Commonly used in meteorology to describe atmospheric pressure. Hecto means hundred with the Unit Pascal, hence 1 hpa = 1 millibar of pressure).
Depression Joseph will affect the archipelago of Madeira from Tuesday. Rain is forecast, more intense in the highlands of the island of Madeira.
The wind is expected to blow from the west/southwest, moderate to strong, turning to the northwest throughout the day, with gusts that may reach 75 km/h, and may reach 95 km/h in mountainous areas.
As for the state of the sea, the IPMA points to a northwest swell of 4 to 5 metres, increasing to 5 to 6 metres on the north coast of Madeira and Porto Santo. The maximum height of the waves could reach 12 meters from Sunday afternoon.
In view of the incoming weather conditions, the IPMA has issued yellow and orange level weather warnings, mainly related to strong winds and sea agitation, recommending regular monitoring of weather updates.
