Albuquerque: Presidential Election Campaign is Mediocre

When asked about the current presidential campaign, Miguel Albuquerque was quite critical, classifying it as weak and unenlightening.

“I think this campaign is a little mediocre, too mediocre,” he said, recalling that the President of the Republic does not govern and, therefore, should not present government programmes.

While talking to reporters, Miguel Albuquerque criticised the presidential campaign and warned of the fragility of democracy. The President of Madeira stated that he is keeping somewhat distant from the campaign, but assured that he will support Marques Mendes, a candidate who, in his perspective, best defends the interests of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. “I support the one who best safeguards the interests of the region, who needs stability and someone who understands the reality of autonomies,” he said.

Miguel Albuquerque also criticised the candidate’s behaviour regarding the mobility allowance. “We hope that Dr. Marques Mendes will finally be more assertive and speak out about this disgraceful mobility subsidy,” he said.

Miguel Albuquerque also warned of the risks of political extremism, especially on social networks, recalling that “democracy is a fragile regime that requires common sense, consideration, moderation and dialogue.”

The Presidential elections are this Sunday, the 18th of January.
