The Regional Authority for Economic Activities (ARAE) seized about 60 kilos of fruit and vegetables that were unfit for consumption, the Regional Secretariat for Economy revealed today. The produce was seized during a crackdown on the 30th of December near a large area of food and non-food products.
After expert examination, the goods were seized and rendered useless, and criminal proceedings were initiated.
The purpose of this ARAE inspection was to verify the properties for human consumption of foodstuffs, expiration dates, labelling, marketing rules, as well as processes based on the principles of the HACCP system (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), a system focuses on the identification, evaluation and control of hazards (biological, chemical, at all stages of the food chain to ensure product safety, which is mandatory in Portugal for food companies.
In this action, the display of prices and possible unfair commercial practices or other economic infractions were also assessed.
The ARAE is under the supervision of the Regional Secretariat for Economy. Its mission is to supervise, throughout the territory of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, compliance with the legislation regulating the exercise of economic activities in the food and non-food sectors.
In addition to ensuring respect for practices and regulations for food safety, health and well-being of the population, ARAE also promotes the defence of safety and protection of consumer rights, with a view to the regular functioning of markets, the competitiveness of the economy and the promotion of competition, ensuring that the products and services offered comply with the rules in force and that consumers are protected against unfair commercial practices.
