Funchal residents and merchants have spoken to media outlet JM, telling reporters that they live “between fear, dirt and impunity,” denouncing the constant presence of prostitution and drug trafficking along their streets.
Responding, the Public Security Police has said that they are aware of the problem, but state that police action only moves the problem from one area to another.
This year, 25 people have been arrested for property crimes, and 48 individuals have been flagged for drug use.
