It was chaos on Madeira’s roads this evening from Cancela to Porto Novo as a 40-foot container broke free of its restraints and shot across the highway, demolished a barrier, and ended up on the other side of the via rapida, breaking a further safety barrier.
What was amazing was that the container did not hit any other moving vehicles and slewed to a standstill, blocking both lanes of traffic on the other side of the road.
As a result, all arterial roads through Cancela were blocked by heavy traffic. The crash occurred between Caniço de Baixo (Junction 16) and the Porto Novo Junction (Junction 17). Although both lanes were blocked, VIALITORAL emphasised that they would work as quickly as possible to ensure that one lane was reopened when it was safe to do so.
