Madeirans Need Their City Back

Chega’s candidacy for the Funchal City Council presents concrete measures to prevent uncontrolled immigration that has been overwhelming the city, affecting housing, safety, and the quality of life of Funchal families.

Filipe Santos, candidate of Chega, is clear: “There has to be a joint work of the municipal bodies. The parish councils issue the residence certificates, and the City Council is responsible for inspecting the housing conditions: how many people live at the property? How many rooms are there? If there is overcrowding or poor conditions? These are things that any sensible government would undertake to ensure the safety of its citizens and those residing in the area.”

The party says that, in recent years, Funchal has seen a significant increase in immigrants, many in an irregular situation, “without any effective verification of the conditions in which they reside.”

“This causes an overload on health services, schools, and social support structures, in addition to contributing to situations of insecurity,” he indicates.

Chega defends, in this sense, the reinforcement of municipal urban inspection, in collaboration with the police, to detect and report cases of illegal immigration and overcrowding of houses; the creation of a municipal regulation for the allocation of social housing that gives priority to Funchal residents and those who contribute to the economy via taxation; thee suspension of municipal support for those who are in an irregular situation until their documentation is regularized and the establishment of a protocol with the PSP to guarantee more means to fight illegal immigration and associated crime.

Filipe Santos stresses: “We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to uncontrolled immigration. Funchal cannot be a destination for those who come to live in illegal conditions, overcrowded houses, and put pressure on services that are already stretched to the limit. We have to defend the safety, quality of life, and cultural identity of our city.”
