Twenty percent of Madeiran workers are on the brink of poverty due to low wages, states the Secretary General of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP), Tiago Oliveira, after a two-day visit to the Region.
Speaking to Radio 88.8 JM FM, Tiago Oliveira denounced that the private sector employs 27 thousand precarious workers. As for wages, the union leader says that 58% of workers earn less than a thousand euros per month.
When confronted by the statements of the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, who recently announced that Madeira’s economy has been growing for 48 consecutive months, Tiago Oliveira explains that this happens because governments put company profits before workers.
