The Portuguese Association of People with Special Needs – Association Without Limits recalls the approval of the reserved parking vertical sign for people with disabilities and calls on all Municipalities to update their signage and comply with the law.
That association recalls that, according to Regulatory Decree No. 22-A/98, of October 1, which approves the Traffic Signs Regulation (RST) with subsequent amendments: there is a requirement for homologation and reflectorisation of traffic signs.
“In article 5 of the RST, it mentions that traffic signs must be placed and maintained in good conditions of visibility, legibility, and conservation. They must comply with the technical standards contained in the regulation and be approved by the competent authority (normally, the Institute of Mobility and Transport – IMT). And they must be reflective or illuminated, to ensure their visibility at night or in poor lighting conditions.”
Regarding the specific technical requirements, the RST technical standard imposes reflectorisation. Thus, stressing that all vertical traffic signs must have retroreflective materials of minimum class II (or higher, depending on the location and type of road); as well as approval: The signs must be certified by recognised manufacturers and meet IMT standards.
