Russia says it has shot down Portuguese mercenaries in Ukraine, according to one of the Kremlin’s news agencies, who state that a group of fighters were killed in the Donetsk area.
According to a Russian commander interviewed, the nationality of the troops was confirmed thanks to intercepted radio communications. Later, Russian agencies confirmed that those killed were mercenaries due to items found on the bodies.
In response to this, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs admitted that it was and is not aware of Portuguese fighting with Ukrainian forces
Sources in the Ukrainian army contacted by SIC did not comment on this specific case, but reveal that in recent days, there have been requests for clarification of other similar news, which they attribute to Russian propaganda.
SIC commenter, José Milhazes, a SIC stressed that the information came from an official Kremlin source, which often deals in propaganda but very occasionally releases information that is close to the truth.
“It may be true” that they spoke Portuguese, as many Russian military colleges teach Portuguese.
Concluding, José Milhazes, said that the men died quite horribly as they were burned to death by flamethrowers. As to the number, that remains an unanswered question.
