PAN-Madeira was present at the 51st Funchal Book Fair, an event that, they believe is essential for the promotion of literature, critical thinking, and democratic access to culture.
In a statement, they say:
“This fair energises the city, encourages reading habits, and fosters the local economy. For PAN Madeira, it is crucial to invest in public policies that value culture and ensure its continuity and diversification events.”
After contact with booksellers and second-hand booksellers, the party expressed their disappointment in the lack of support for the sector.
The party defends greater support for local bookstores and regional authors, promoting more events throughout the year, incentives for the publication of Madeiran writers, more investment in public libraries, and the promotion of reading in schools. In addition, it considers it essential to decentralise culture so that it reaches all the region’s parishes’ benefit.
Vernon Ramos, deputy spokesperson for PAN Madeira, highlighted that “access to culture is not just for some, but as an essential pillar for the social and economic development accessible for all.”
It is necessary to ensure that people have access to books, knowledge, and spaces of artistic creation, promoting a more inclusive and informed society. PAN Madeira reaffirms its commitment to access to culture and the enhancement of the sector, considering that investing in this area creates a more critical thinking and informed society.
