Nova Direita: Advocate Modular Housing

The New Right’s candidacy for the early elections in Madeira defends the use of modular construction as a way to quickly construct low-cost housing in the region.

In a statement, Paulo Azevedo stated:

“Our proposal is based on modular construction. Within six months, people will have an apartment that is ready to move into.  These properties can then be bought at cost and with an average T2 construction costs approximately 70,000 euros it makes cost effective and economic sense.”

The candidate argues that the Regional Government should then act as a guarantor, ensuring easier access to bank credit.

Paulo Azevedo was speaking to journalists while visiting a social housing estate of Nogueira, in the parish of Camacha. He went on to say:

“I think this is the fastest solution, and we can’t be blaming local accommodation or closed houses,” he said, stressing that “the housing problem is not only the lack of houses,” but the costs associated with the whole process, starting with the project and bank loans.

According to the head of the New Right list, modular construction is also a way to get around the lack of labour in the region, a circumstance that he says makes it impossible to quickly build 500 or 1,000 conventional apartments, as other political forces defend.

Paulo Azevedo guarantees that modular construction, in addition to being cheaper, requires less labour, and mentioned, as an example, a 72-room hotel in Funchal that was built in six months.

Modular housing is becoming more accessible, with several companies on the mainland offering well-built, energy-efficient homes to suit most budgets.
